Godney Aquaponics

Godney Aquaponics
In the village of Godney, with the beautiful back drop of the Glastonbury Tor, Melv and Sal are embarking on a new venture. Fed up with the poor quality of veg in the shops, they have the ambition to set up an aquaponics system to provide fresh vegetables and salad crops for the village, and with a little help from their hens a supply of fresh free range eggs too.

What is Aquaponics??

What is Aquaponics??
Aquaponics is a sustainable method of producing quality food with minimal external inputs. It is a system that combines conventional aquaculture (e.g. fish in tanks) with hydroponics (cultivating plants in water) in a symbiotic environment. Water from the aquaculture system is fed to the hydroponic system where the by-products are broken down and are utilised by the plants as nutrients, and the water is then re-circulated back to the aquaculture system.

A special time of year

Despite the poor weather and low temperatures there is no getting away from it, this is a special and exciting time of year if you like growing vegetables!

The polytunnel is certainly come into its own, regularly at 15 degrees or over, when it can be 8 or less outside, the warm, wind free conditions are perfect to give newly sowed seeds a head start. The asparagus is doing brilliantly, seen above at the end of the bed, with newly potted on herbs, cabbage, spinach and pea species all growing vigorously - in the foreground.

The red orache plants above continue to impress with their deep purple arrow shaped leaves, they are ready to go in the ground and will be the first to be planted in one of the new outside beds as soon as the weather warms up a little.

Green and fresh the parsley is the perfect symbol of spring.

A sea of turnips, radish and beetroot - lovely, and tasty too...

The first dwarf bean, chard and courgette plants to be planted into their new home.

Early tomatoes also now in their grow bags, mini plum and Alicante all with stems the width of your finger and just starting to form their first trusses.

Work in progress...
