Godney Aquaponics

Godney Aquaponics
In the village of Godney, with the beautiful back drop of the Glastonbury Tor, Melv and Sal are embarking on a new venture. Fed up with the poor quality of veg in the shops, they have the ambition to set up an aquaponics system to provide fresh vegetables and salad crops for the village, and with a little help from their hens a supply of fresh free range eggs too.

What is Aquaponics??

What is Aquaponics??
Aquaponics is a sustainable method of producing quality food with minimal external inputs. It is a system that combines conventional aquaculture (e.g. fish in tanks) with hydroponics (cultivating plants in water) in a symbiotic environment. Water from the aquaculture system is fed to the hydroponic system where the by-products are broken down and are utilised by the plants as nutrients, and the water is then re-circulated back to the aquaculture system.

The final side

With the front now complete there was just one remaining side of the barn to clad and that was potentially going to be the most difficult, as it is the one next to the ditch! However it is the side that is most visible from the village and we really wanted to smarten it up so people weren't looking at an eyesore - as it is, it isn't the barn's best side!

First the vegetation needed clearing to gain access and there wasn't a lot of room to move.

Being careful not to trip over the many brambles Sal soon revealed the very shabby corrugated sheets behind.

However fortunately behind these sheets there were some good timbers to fix our battens to hold the cladding and it wasn't long before the boards were going up.

Hard to stand back and check the handy work a view from the track started to show what a transformation it was going to be.

It was certainly going to look smart -

What a difference a bit of featheredge can make!
